Caption: Breast cancer. Coloured digitised scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a breast cancer cell. Typical of breast cancer cells is their large size and undifferentiated appearance. Here, the cell has hair-like structures projecting from its surface, which may assist mobility. A cancerous tumour arises through transformation of normal cells into ones that escape the usual moderating controls of growth and differentiation. The cell divides rapidly and displays nuclear abnormality. It has the ability to invade other tissues. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, and is usually a carcinoma. Magnification: unknown.
