Breast cancer. Computer-enhanced coloured mammogram of a female breast showing a cancerous tumour, which appears as the round yellow area. Mammography is a special X-ray technique that is used to visualize soft tissues of the breast as a means of screening women for breast cancer. Most cancers arise in the mammary ducts and the remainder in the lobular glands. Tumours of either type may show early evidence of invasive (malignant) behaviour, but both types may exist in non-invasive forms. Treatment is based on surgery, involving conservative removal of just the tumour or the more radical removal of the whole breast.
