Caption: Breast cancer. Coloured gamma scan showing malignant tumours in a woman's right breast. Three views are shown: the left breast (upper left), the right breast (upper right) and both breasts viewed from the front (lower left). The tumours appear as pale blue lesions on the right breast. Breast cancer affects about 1 woman in 20. Successful treatment depends on early detection, as once the cancer has spread, as it has here, it becomes much harder to cure. Gamma scans are made by a gamma camera, which detects the distribution of a radioactive tracer that concentrates in particular body tissues.
