Caption: Cross-section through a model of the beam tunnel for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC), the proposed new American proton accelerator. The SSC would be be housed in a 83 km circumference tunnel that is 3 metres in diameter. Some 10,000 superconducting magnets will guide & focus two beams of protons in opposite directions around the tunnel. The protons beams will be accelerated to approaching the speed of light before being allowed to collide head-on, with an energy of up to 40 teraelectron volts (TeV), causing the release & interaction of exotic, & new, subatomic particles.
