Caption: Mastitis. Close-up of the inflamed nipple of an 18 year old man caused by mastitis, a bacterial infection. Although far more common in breast- feeding women, mastitis may affect either gender. Damage to the nipple can allow the bacteria to enter and multiply, causing swelling, tenderness, pain and redness. Treatment usually includes the taking of antibiotics and painkillers. In men it may be a complication of "jogger's nipple", abrasion of the nipple by loose clothing whilst exercising. This damages and thins the skin in this area, reducing its ability to stop bacteria entering the body.
