Caption: Breast cancer surgery. Image 5 of 6. Surgeon using a navigator gamma guidance system (lower centre) on a woman's axillary (underarm) lymph nodes. This is a type of radiation detector used to isolate radioactively labelled cancer cells. Metal retractors are holding back the skin, revealing lymph ducts (blue) injected with a tracing dye. In this procedure, tumours are being removed from the breast and axillary lymph nodes as part of a wide local excision (WLE) operation. For a series showing this procedure, see images M122/491 - M122/496.
