Caption: Cryptococcosis disease. Fluorescence light micro- graph of human brain tissue revealing the presence of the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans (orange), the cause of cryptococcosis or torulosis disease. This yeast fungus is responsible for tumour-like lesions in the lungs known as torulomas, but it also spreads to the brain causing meningitis. The disease is caught from soil or pigeon droppings. Cryptococcosis is rare and can be treated by using the antibiotic amphotericin B.
