Caption: Illustration of Crohn's disease confined to the terminal ileum of the small intestine. A chronic inflammatory disease, Crohn's can affect any part of the gut with ulcers (from mouth to anus) which may cause pain, fever, diarrhoea and weight loss. As here, the most common site of infection is the terminal ileum, seen inflamed and ulcerated (at right), where it leads into the large intestine. The curved appendix is at lower left. The ileum wall becomes swollen thick where this disease occurs, in patchy places. The cause of Crohn's disease is unknown. Commonly affecting the young and the elderly, it is treated with corticosteroid drugs, a change of diet, and sometimes surgery.
