Caption: Image of the abdomen of a patient after total colectomy and ileostomy surgery. These operations were carried out to treat ulcerative colitis. It is a severe inflammation of the colon of unknown cause in which the colon becomes inflamed and ulcerated. The usual symptoms are diarrhoea with blood and mucus and lower abdominal pain. In this case the whole colon was removed and ileostomy was performed. In ileostomy the ileum, the lowest part of the small intestine, is surgically severed and brought through the abdominal wall to form an artificial outlet, called stoma, which allows the discharge of faeces into a bag attached to the skin.
