Caption: Gross excoriation (removal of skin) over the body of an alcoholic suffering from cirrhosis. In alcoholic cirrhosis, the liver responds to alcohol toxicity by producing strands of fibrous tissue. This leads to a progressive decline in function, as the blood supply to healthy cells becomes impaired. Complete abstinence halts this degeneration, although any damage cannot be repaired. Some cases show no symptoms; otherwise, mild jaundice, oedema and vomiting blood may present. In men, a feminizing effect, with loss of hair, breast enlargement & testicular atrophy, may take place.
