Caption: Cradle cap. Scalp of a baby suffering mild "cradle cap", known also as crusta lactea. The condition is a form of seborrhoeic dermatitis which affects young infants. Yellow scales occur in patches over the scalp, and may also occur on the face, neck, behind the ears, and in the nappy area. Cradle cap is harmless if the skin does not become infected. It is best treated with shampoo preparations designed for this purpose, used on a daily basis until the condition subsides. If the area becomes inflamed, an antibiotic or corticosteroid drug may be prescribed.
