Caption: Cyanosis. Elderly woman's lips turned purple due to central cyanosis. The condition of cyanosis is most commonly due to slow blood flow, leading to a bluish skin colouration. There is too much deoxygenated haemoglobin in the blood, with a decreased supply of oxygen to body tissues. Most cases occur in low temperatures, where no other symptoms are present and the condition is harm- less. However, cyanosis may be associated with heart failure, lung disease, and in some instances even lead to suffocation. Blue babies are cyanotic as the result of a heart defect in which too little blood passes into the lungs to be oxygenated.
