Caption: Corn on little toe. View of a corn (callus) on the little toe in an adult. The corn (centre) is a disc of hardened tissue surrounded by reddened skin. Corns (also known as a callosity or clavus) are areas of thickened skin caused by pressure or friction; they are commonly found on the feet and hands. In this case the corn has been caused by the patient wearing ill-fitting shoes. The horny skin forms an inverted pyramid which presses down into the deeper layers of the skin causing pain. Corns are treated by soaking in hot water or by applying softening agents. A spongy ring or corn pad placed over the corn will ease the pressure, and the corn should gradually disappear.
