Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Chickenpox. Young boy (5 year old) affected by varicella, also known as chickenpox, is seen lying in bed. A rash of dark red pimples is seen on his face and arms. He is suffering from a fever, and there is a thermometer in his mouth. Chickenpox is an infectious disease of childhood caused by a herpesvirus which is transmitted in airborne droplets. A mild fever and itchy rash of pimples occurs over the whole body; the pimples develop into blisters, which scab and drop off. The only treatment is bed rest and the application of calamine lotion relieves the itchiness of the rash. In adults, symptoms may be more severe.
