Caption: Hordeolum or stye on eyelid. Close-up of an inflamed and reddened upper eyelid. This is caused by a stye (medical name - hordeolum) which is a bacterial infection of a gland at the base of an eyelash. The infection causes acute inflammation and the hardened gland develops a pus-filled cyst at it's centre. Styes are treated by bathing in warm water and removal of the eyelash involved. Using an ointment containing antibiotics (anti-bacterial drugs) can help prevent a recurrence.
