Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of a Cape sundew, Drosera capensis, an insectivorous plant that catches its victim (the small black mushroom fly, family: Psilidae) by means of slow-moving tentacles (a stalked gland with a sticky excretion on the spherical top). As the insect struggles to free itself, more of the tentacles move inwards to trap it. The fly is at last exhausted & defeated . Each small movement of the insect produces a corr- esponding action potential in the sundew's leaf that causes the tentacles to move: the effects of struggling are cumulative. In dealing with large insects the whole leaf may become wrapped around the victim. Mag: X6 at 35mm, X42 at 10x8 inch size
