Caption: Cellulitis. View of swelling and inflammation on a man's hand due to cellulitis. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin & the tissues beneath it. Cellulitis is often caused by infection with Streptococcus bacteria entering through a wound or break in the skin. In this case it was due to an infection of a wasp sting. The affected area is hot & tender. Untreated cellulitis may result in septicaemia or gangrene. Cellulitis is usually treated with penicillin or erythromycin antibiotic drugs. People with immuno- deficiency disorders or diabetes are more vulnerable to this type of infection.
