Caption: Cellulitis. Cellulitis (reddened area) on the toe of a 75-year-old man. Cellulitis occurs when bacteria such as streptococci infect connective tissue below the skin. A common cause is a wound that allows the bacteria to penetrate, such as a bite or scratch from a cat. The affected area becomes hot, tender and red, and the patient may become feverish. If left untreated the infection can spread, potentially leading to gangrene or septicaemia (infection of the blood). The usual treatment is a course of antibiotics. This patient was suffering from non-insulin dependent diabetes, which impairs the body's ability to fight infection.
