Caption: Oral thrush. View of the tongue of an 80 year-old woman suffering from oral candidiasis, also known as thrush. The infection has produced sore yellow patches on the tongue of the patient. This is caused by the fungus candida albicans which more often infects the mucus membrane inside the vagina. Candida albicans is always present in the mouth and vagina but it's growth is limited by other bacteria in these regions. Thrush can develop after a course of antibiotic drugs which destroy too many of body's natural bacteria. In this case the patient has recently been treated with antibiotics for a chest infection. Thrush infection is treated with antifungal drugs.
