Caption: Cystic fibrosis. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a slice through the chest of a patient with cystic fibrosis. The front of the patient is at top of image. Lungs are blue, at upper centre (red) is the location of the heart & major blood vessels. Bones are yellow with the backbone seen at lower centre. Red spots seen in the lung tissue represent the bronchioles of the lungs filling with mucus secretions. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease affecting the exocrine glands, leading to excessive mucus production. Lung tissue is particularly affected, being prone to infection as a result. CT scans use X-rays to create sliced images. Image P590/162:healthy lungs.
