Caption: Crohn's disease. Coloured barium X-ray showing the intestine of a patient suffering Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause that affects the small intestine, but the colon and rectum may also be involved (as here). Bones of the pelvis (green) are at lower frame. At centre is healthy small intestine (yellow). Crohn's disease is seen as a cobblestone ulcerated appearance of the gut (upper centre) and narrowing of the terminal ileum (at right). The colon (at top and left) and rectum (lower centre) are also affected. Crohn's disease leads to pain, obstruction, diarrhoea, and malabsorption of food. Treatment may include steroid drugs and surgery.
