Caption: Cellulitis. Close-up of swelling and blistering on a 49 year old woman's leg due to cellulitis. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin and its underlying tissues. Cellulitis is often due to infection by Streptococcus bacteria entering through a wound or break in the skin. Here, the infection developed from an insect bite. Cellulitis may cause a fever and chills, and if it is left untreated, it may result in septicaemia or gangrene. It is usually treated with penicillin or erythromycin antibiotic drugs.
