Caption: Cholangitis. Light micrograph of a section through the liver showing acute ascending cholangitis, an inflammation of the bile duct. The bile duct (circle, at upper left) is surrounded by neutrophil white blood cells (dark dots), found at sites of infection and inflammation. At upper right is a large blood vessel around which are the sinusoids, much smaller blood vessels in which red blood cells (red) can be seen. This type of cholangitis is usually caused by the bile duct becoming blocked, for example by a gallstone or tumour. This results in jaundice, abdominal pain and fever. Haemotoxylin and Eosin stain. Magnification unknown.
