Caption: Cystic fibrosis. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through a patient's lungs (blue) showing cystic fibrosis (CF). The heart (orange) is seen at upper right, with a vertebra (white) at lower centre. CF is an inherited genetic disease which causes excessive production of thick mucus in the airways (bronchi) of the lungs. This is seen by the thick orange branching in the lung at centre left. The mucus clogs the airways, causing them to expand. Affected people are highly susceptible to chest infections. Although these are treatable with antibiotics, life expectancy is significantly reduced.
