Caption: Crohn's disease. Endoscope view of ulceration and inflammation in the ileum, part of the small intestine, due to Crohn's disease. Nodules are also seen at lower left, which may be developing pseudopolyps. This disease may affect any part of the digestive tract, but is most common in the ileum or colon (large intestine). In the ileum it causes spasms of pain, sickness, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and weight loss. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery to remove the affected area of intestine. In severe cases, patients may require blood transfusions and intravenous feeding. Even after surgery the disease commonly recurs.
