Caption: Crohn's disease. Polyps on the inner lining of a removed section of ileum (the last part of the small intestine) due to Crohn's disease (regional ileitis). The polypoid appearance of the lining of the ileum is due to repeated episodes of ulceration and inflammation. Crohn's disease can affect all parts of the digestive tract. When located in the ileum it causes pain, weight loss, diarrhoea and sickness. Abscesses and fistulas (passages) may also develop. Surgical removal of the affected area can treat the disease, but it often recurs.
