Caption: Cushing's syndrome. Light micrograph of a section through human adrenal gland tumours, causing Cushing's syndrome. The tumours (neoplasms) are benign (non-cancerous) adenomas. They cause the adrenal gland to over-produce cortisteroid hormones (micro-polyadenomatosis). The adenomas, upper centre and centre right, show multiple irregular-shaped cells, with large nuclei (pink). Symptoms of Cushing's syndrome include a moon- faced appearance, excess body and facial hair (especially in women), raised blood pressure and mental disturbances. Treatment requires the removal of the adrenal gland, followed by hormone replacement drugs. Magnification unknown.
