Caption: Liver cirrhosis. Image 1 of 4. Artwork of stage one, portal stage, of the Child's classification system of liver cirrhosis. Cirrhosis replaces normal tissue with fibrous tissue, causing the loss of functional liver cells. It may result from alcohol abuse, nutritional deprivation or viral hepatitis infection. Damage during this stage includes portal inflammation and destroyed hepatocytes (yellow). The hepatic artery (red), supplying arterial blood and the portal vein (blue), carrying venous blood from the intestinal tract are seen at lower right. For a sequence of the four stages see images M130/658 - 661.
