Caption: Crohn's disease. Coloured barium enema X-ray of the large intestine (brown) showing inflammation due to Crohn's disease. This disease causes inflammation and ulceration of the intestines, leading to a narrowing of its lumen (as seen at lower left) and a ragged appearance (centre). It causes pain, diarrhoea and malabsorption of food, which leads to weight loss. It is not known what causes the disease. Anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics can help to relieve the symptoms, but surgery is often required to remove severely damaged parts of the intestine. Some vertebrae (spine bones, light blue) are seen down centre.
