Caption: Crohn's disease. Endoscope view of inflammation and swelling (oedema) in the ileum. This form, which affects the ileum (the final part of the small intestine), is known as Crohn's ileocolitis. The granular (cobble stone) appearance (lower left) is indicative of the inflammation extending deeper into the bowel wall. Crohn's disease seems to have both genetic and environmental causes, and is not well understood. Symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs or in severe cases, the affected area of intestine may be surgically removed.
