Caption: Blockage of bile ducts. Light micrograph of a section through liver tissue with blocked biliary ducts. Plugs of bile (brown) have blocked the flow of bile out of the liver. This cessation of bile production, known as cholestasis, has resulted in jaundice, the yellowing of the skin and the eyes by bilirubin, a waste product normally removed by the liver in bile. Bile is also used to aid in the digestion of fats in the intestine. If there is a large physical blockage, surgery may be needed to remove it.
