Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Infected sebaceous cyst on a 26-year-old male patient's back. The cyst is red and swollen with pus. The natural outcome is for the cyst to burst, releasing the contents. It is most painful just prior to the discharge of pus. Sebaceous cysts form when the secretory (sebaceous) gland associated with the hair follicle becomes blocked. The formation of the cyst is harmless but the infection needs attention. Treatment is by incision or lancing of the cyst and drainage of the pus. A course of antibiotic drugs is taken to treat the infection.
