Caption: Constipation. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen of a patient with impacted bowels. This is a frontal scan showing the bowels (intestines, light brown, lower right) as well as the liver (pink, upper left). An impaction of the bowels (a type of constipation) is a collection of stationary faeces in the large intestine, usually near the end. It results in a build up of faeces behind the impaction that can disrupt the other abdominal organs. It usually requires manual manipulation to clear the blockage. CT scanning uses multiple X-ray beams to scan the body from different angles. Computers create a 3D image of the area scanned.
