Caption: Corticobasal degeneration. Coloured single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans of axial sections through the brain of a patient with corticobasal degeneration (CBD). The scans at bottom were taken 2.5 years after the scans at top. CBD causes nerve cell loss and atrophy (shrinkage) of multiple areas of the brain (shown as blue and green areas on the scans). Symptoms include; impaired balance, muscle rigidity, speech difficulty and sensory loss. There is no cure for the condition. SPECT scans use gamma cameras to detect radioactive tracers, injected into the blood, that accumulate in areas of high metabolic activity.
