Caption: Coeliac disease. Light micrograph of a section through the duodenum of a patient with coeliac disease. The duodenum is the beginning of the small intestine. The surface appears flat due to the loss of villi, small finger-like projections that increase the intestine's surface area. Coeliac disease is a genetic disorder in which the intestinal lining reacts to gluten, a protein found in wheat and other cereals. This causes malabsorption of nutrients from food and leads to mineral and vitamin deficiencies. Magnification: x70 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
