Caption: Collagenous colitis. Light micrograph of a section through the colon (large intestine) of a patient with collagenous colitis, an inflammatory condition where excessive collagen (very light pink) is deposited beneath the surface. Symptoms are watery diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The cause of the disease is unknown. There is no cure, but the symptoms can be controlled by anti- inflammatory drugs. Stained with eosin and haematoxylin. Magnification: x55 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
