Caption: Crohn's disease, coloured double contrast barium enema X-ray. Crohn's disease is an inflammatory disorder of the intestines. Here it is primarily affecting the ileum, the last part of the small intestine, which is seen at lower left. The inflammation of the walls of the ileum has given it a narrowed and irregular appearance. The ileum joins onto the much wider colon at centre left. Crohn's disease causes abdominal pain, diarrhoea and bloating. Anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant drugs are used to control the condition, and severely affected parts of the intestine can be removed surgically.
