Caption: Sclerosis cholangitis. Light micrograph of a section through liver tissue affected by sclerosis cholangitis. This is a disease in which the bile ducts become inflamed and hardened, which restricts the flow of bile. Bile is necessary for the absorption of fats from food in the intestines, and blockage of the bile ducts causes low levels of fat-soluble vitamins (notably A and D) and fat in the faeces, as well as jaundice. It is thought that the condition is an autoimmune disorder, one in which the immune system attacks its own tissues. Treatment is with bile-like drugs, vitamin supplements and if necessary a liver transplant. Masson's trichrome stain.
