Caption: Pitcher plant pitchers. View of the pitchers of the carnivorous pitcher plant Nepenthes distillatoria. Insects are attracted to the modified leaves by their strong scent. Once inside, they lose their purchase on the slippery walls and fall into a pool of liquid at the bottom, where they drown. Downward-pointing barbs inside the neck of the pitcher prevent the biggest insects from crawling back out. The liquid contains protein-digesting enzymes that dissolve the dead bodies and release nitrogen compounds to the plant, compensating for the lack of nutrients in the soil. Photographed at Sinharoja, Sri Lanka.
