Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Chloasma on a 43 year old woman's cheek. Also called melasma, these large, brown patches on the skin are caused by a localised increase in the dark pigment melanin. The condition often occurs during pregnancy, as a side effect of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medications. The patches usually occur on the forehead, temples and cheeks and are harmless.
