Caption: Ulcerative colitis, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). A section of human intestine with ulcerative colitis. The mucosal cells are irregular and almost exclusively absorptive. The lack of goblet cells (mucus secreting cells) is a characteristic of the disease. Ulcerative colitis is the inflammation and ulceration of the colon and rectum, the causes of which are unknown. Magnification: x800 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
