Caption: Illustration of the three most common locations of cancer in the stomach (gastric cancer). Cancer formations are represented by yellow masses protruding inwards from the stomach walls. Cancer usually develops in the antrum, the part close to the duodenum the first part of the small intestine (bottom left) and in the fundus which is close to the oesophagus (top right). The cause of stomach cancer is still uncertain and environmental, ethnic and dietary factors probably play an important role. Symptoms include loss of appetite and weight, nausea and vomiting. The most effective treatment is total gastrectomy which is carried out if the tumour has not spread widely.
