Caption: Lung cancer. Gross specimen of lungs affected by squamous cell carcinoma. Here, the surface of the lungs shows discolouration due to black tumours and scar tissue. Squamous cell carcinoma is a highly malignant cancer arising from epithelial cells that line the surface of an organ. Cancer of the lung is a common cancer, with tobacco smoking being the main cause. The first symptom to appear is a cough which may become chronic, shortness of breath, chest pain and wheezing. The cancer may spread (metastasis) from one lung to the other, as occurred here, and may also spread to other organs such as the liver, brain and bones.
