Caption: Colon cancer. Endoscope view of a cancerous polyp (growth) in the colon (large intestine). This is an adenocarcinoma, a tumour arising from glandular tissue. Colon cancer is common in the developed world and is thought to be linked to a high-fat, low-fibre diet. Symptoms include constipation or diarrhoea, abdominal pain and blood in the faeces (melaena). If the cancer is detected early, surgical removal of the area may effect a cure.
