Caption: Liver cancer. Sectioned gross clinical specimen of primary malignant (cancerous) tumours (neoplasms, orange dots) of the liver. This is a hepatoma, the most common type of liver cancer. It is associated with viral hepatitis infections and results in weight loss, pain and jaundice. If it is diagnosed early, and not complicated by cirrhosis, surgery to remove the tumour is possible. In other cases, anticancer drugs may allow the patient to survive longer, but ultimately only a transplant will effect a cure. The specimen is not displaying cirrhosis, the degeneration of cells and thickening of tissues.
