Caption: Cancer. Conceptual artwork of the beginning of a cancerous tumour in epithelial tissue. Most tumours are thought to originate from a single cell that begins to divide uncontrollably (dark red, lower right). This is caused by genetic changes, represented here by damaged chromosomes (yellow, upper left). Further genetic changes may cause the resulting growth to become malignant, invading surrounding tissues.
