Caption: Lung cancer. Gross specimen of an adenocarcinoma (grey, upper centre) in the lung. This is a cancer that has a glandular appearance, as it arose from glandular tissue. Cancer is a disease caused by the uncontrolled division of cells, which leads to the formation of a tumour. In the lungs, it may cause a cough (often producing blood), chest pain and shortness of breath. If the cancer is detected early, before it has spread to other sites in the body, removal of the affected area may effect a cure. If it has spread, the prognosis is poor. Most lung cancers are primarily caused by tobacco smoking, although the relationship is less clear with adenocarcinomas than other types.
