Caption: Oesophagus cancer. Endoscope view of a cancerous tumour (neoplasm, lower left) in the mid-part of the oesophagus (gullet) of a 72 year-old male patient. This type of cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) accounts for 60% of all intestinal cancers. Its cause is uncertain, but overuse of cigarettes and alcohol as well as drinking superheated beverages (such as tea and coffee) may be implicated. Prognosis for this condition is poor, treatment is by surgical excision, but only offers 15% survival over five years.
