Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Tonsil gland cancer. Swollen neck of an 81-year- old man with cancer of the tonsils. This is a secondary cancer (metastases) that has spread to the tonsils from a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). An SCC is a malignant tumour (neoplasm) that arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of squamous cells, flattened cells in the skin and mucous membranes. The tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue, part of the lymphatic system that defends the body against infection. Secondary cancers have a poor prognosis, although if the tumour is localised surgical excision followed by radiotherapy may prolong life.
