Caption: Throat cancer. Patient with large swellings in the neck due to a cancer of the nasopharynx and also due to swollen neck glands. The nasopharynx is the space extending from the nose down to the level of the mouth, forming part of the upper throat. It is lined with mucous membranes. It is this epithelial lining that has turned cancerous, forming a type of cancer known as a carcinoma. The lymph nodes in the neck often become swollen as cancer can spread through the lymphatic system. The primary cancer is treated with radiotherapy, and chemotherapy is used to treat any cancer that has spread to other sites in the body. Photographed in Africa.
